I first met David in 1971 when I joined GEC as a graduate apprentice and joined his department for the first three months of my apprenticeship. I rejoined his department the next year and he was my boss until he retired nearly 30 years later. He was an amazing engineer and he taught me a lot about engineering, and particularly how to do things properly. We spent some time together in Australia on one of our projects and to watch him in action against a difficult customer was impressive. He received an award from the IEEE Power and Energy Society in the US about 20 years ago and I am privileged to say that as a result of his tutelage, I won the same award in 2010. I was pleased to be able to acknowledge his influence on me at the awards ceremony.

It was good to see him again at your mum’s memorial service and although it was a sad occasion, it was nice to catch up on his news. I am sorry that his death was so sudden and you have my sympathy and best wishes at this time.

Best regards
