It set me thinking about happier times. I met your mentor, Eric Friedlander, only once or twice but remember what a nice person he was and I shall never forget the rib-crushing sensation of being next to one of his Treble Triplers when it was on full song! And then there was his “disciple”, Charlie Fletcher, another lovely chap.
I recall your interpretation of time being somewhat different to that of the majority of us, and the several occasions chatting to a rather embarrassed Joy at White Lodge while waiting for you to appear, well past the agreed pick-up time. And then arriving at Manchester airport as our flight was being called, only for you to say “Good, that was the first call so we have plenty of time for a full English breakfast!” You may recall, however, that I inadvertently got my own back in Sidney when, having arranged to meet you and Joy for lunch, I had completely missed the local change of clocks announcements!
Your calm, patient approach to life was legend: I learned a lot from that and like to think that it put me in a good shape to deal with the likes of Power Grid in India, NGC in the UK and many others in my later career. You will remember our 10 hour meeting with a prospective customer in Katovice, devoid of food or even drink until our agent, Jana Corville, took pity on us. Then there was your calm response when I blew up all the series capacitors when commissioning the Anchor project (flat slopes never were a good idea) and the reactors in Portugal (nor were mesh-connected filters).
Good times pushing back the frontiers of knowledge (my standard excuse), not to be repeated, but they remain in the memory bank for ever. Many thanks for your kind instruction, guidance and friendship over many years, David.
