I had known David since 1981, when I joined PES and I worked for him for about 10 years from 1985 until he retired.  He was one of the best engineers I ever met and was knowledgeable on every aspect of electrical engineering.  I learned a lot from David, as he always made time to explain complex topics in an understandable manner to young engineers.    We worked closely on a number of projects, most noticeably the Irish Steel project in Cork, which David and I visited on several occasions.  On one memorable trip we drove from Stafford to Cork and back again, via the Irish sea ferries, with a boot full of high-tech monitoring equipment, which was of great interest to the customs authorities in both countries.  To get to the monitoring point at the Irish Steel plant David and I had to carry the heavy monitoring equipment to the top of the very large arc furnace building on an external stairwell.  Then sit in cramped conditions to make the measurements, with the arc furnace roaring in the background.  The joys of engineering.
