I knew him well from work:  when I started my career in 1989 he was one of the "great gurus" in the business and taught me a huge amount.  He was also excellent company on my first ever overseas business trip, to South Africa in 1993.  We went on to work on several ground-breaking "world first" projects together in the 1990s.
